Homemade burgers are always a favourite quick and easy meal.

While I often make my hamburgers in a skillet, the air fryer is a little bit quicker and you don’t have to deal with the spatter all over the stove. From start to finish these beef burgers are ready in just 15 minutes.

All you need to do is decide on your favourite toppings.

Why We Love This Recipe

It’s fast – This is the possibly the fastest way to get homemade hamburgers to the table. There is almost no preparation involved and they take only 8 minutes to cook.

Simple ingredients – The patties for this recipe are made with one ingredient only, ground beef. You will want to add a bit of seasoning, such as salt and pepper, but you don’t need to worry about adding extra ingredients to make delicious patties. And you can top the burgers with whatever you have on hand.

Ingredients

The ingredients for these beef burgers are super simple.

All you need is ground beef, salt and pepper.

I’m a firm believer that the best burgers only need to be seasoned with salt and pepper. These simple pantry staples allow the flavour of the beef to come through without being overpowered by a bunch of extra ingredients.

If you really want to, you can add a bit of garlic or onion powder, but I think you will find they don’t need it.

I use lean ground beef, between 80 and 85% lean, for my patties as I find it gives the best balance of flavour without dripping with fat.

Instructions

Form the Hamburger Patties

Begin by forming the patties.

First make 4 equal sized balls with the ground beef. Then press the balls out into patties that are about ¼ of an inch thick.

Season the tops of the patties with salt and pepper, then place them in the air fryer basket or tray seasoned side down. Season the tops of the patties with additional salt and pepper.

Three balls of ground beef and one flattened into a ¼ inch thick patty.

Air Fry the Hamburger Patties

Place the basket in the air fryer and set it to 400°F for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, remove the basket and carefully flip the patties, then return to the air fryer for an additional 3 minutes.

The patties should look a bit browned around the edges and will have shrunk up just a bit. If you still see pink juices on the tops of the patties you can return them to the air fryer for an additional minute or two. If you are using a meat thermometer you are looking for around 160°F.

Pro Tip – If you want cheeseburgers with melted cheese, you can add a slice of cheese to the tops of the hamburger patties for the last minute of cook time.

Serving Suggestions

To begin, you are going to want to choose your favourite toppings; some sort of sauce, maybe some cheese and fresh veggies.

If you are feeling ambitious, sautéed mushrooms are always a delicious option too. When I’m looking for a quick, weeknight meal I usually keep it simple. Options include:

  • Cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Red onion
  • Relish
  • Burger sauce

The great thing about hamburgers, especially if you load them with toppings, is that they are a great meal on their own. But they can also be paired with almost any side.

Sometimes we will have a Caesar or green salad, other times I may make a batch of bacon ranch Mac & cheese. And of course you can never go wrong with French fries.

FAQS

Can I make my hamburger patties ahead of time?

Yes, you can make these patties a few hours ahead or even the night before. Just cover them and keep them refrigerated until you are ready to cook.

Can I freeze homemade hamburger patties?

Yes! Simply form the patties and then cut some wax paper or parchment paper to layer between each one so they don’t stick together. You can then pull as many out of the freezer as you need.

You can even cook them from frozen. You will need to add about 5 minutes to the total cook time.
