What is Twisted Bacon?
Twisted bacon is another instantly popular recipe that made its debut on TikTok. It is, quite literally, bacon that has been twisted before its cooked.
The result is delicious bacon sticks, or twists, that have a bit of crunch on the outside while staying a bit more chewy and soft on the inside.
They remind me a bit of the texture of beef jerky.
They are great served with eggs and toast, but because they hold their shape when cooled they make a nice garnish for salads or even Caesars.
Bacon twists are also a delicious low-carb snack.
Pro Tip – Thick cut bacon will give a firmer, chewier texture than thin cut bacon which often will dry out and become crumbly.
Remove the bacon from the package and separate the strips.
Twist each strip into a rope and place in the air fryer basket. It’s ok if they are touching, but do not overlap.
Place the basket in the air fryer and set to 350°F. Cook for 8-12 minutes depending on the thickness of the bacon you are using and your desired crispiness. You do not need to pre-heat the air fryer for this recipe.
I find 10 minutes is perfect, but you may want to start with a bit less time to ensure you don’t over cook it.
Remove the bacon from the air fryer and serve.
If you’d like to blot some of the fat you can set the hot bacon on a plate that has been lined with a paper towel.
Pro Tip – The bacon will continue to cook and firm up as it cools so take it out just before it’s fully holding the twist shape.
You can get creative with your bacon twists for different flavours just by adding some sugar, maple syrup or seasonings before you cook it.
Candied bacon – Brush the bacon with maple syrup or sprinkle with brown sugar before cooking.
Peppered bacon – Add some fresh ground pepper to the bacon strips before twisting and cooking.
Spicy bacon – Sprinkle some dried chilli flakes on the bacon before twisting and cooking.
Honey garlic bacon – Twist the bacon, then brush with honey and sprinkle with granulated garlic before cooking.
You can store cooked bacon in an airtight container or ziplock bag in the refrigerator and it will keep for up to a week.
While the fat is still liquid you can carefully pour it into a jar and once cool you can store it in the refrigerator if you want to keep bacon fat for cooking.
If you don’t plan to keep the fat you can pour it into an old can, or a small bowl that you lined with tin foil. Once the fat has solidified just throw the can or tinfoil away.
After pouring the fat wipe the inside of the basket with a paper towel to absorb the rest of the fat then wash with hot, soapy water.
