Ingredients & Substitutions

For a complete list of ingredients, see the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

These tasty egg rolls come together with just a few ingredients.

Egg roll wrappers – Egg roll wrappers can be purchased in most grocery stores. Often they are sold in the fresh produce department. I can usually find them near the bean sprouts and hot peppers. You may find them in the frozen aisle if you can’t find them there.

Ground beef – I prefer to use lean ground beef for this recipe as it prevents the egg rolls from becoming too greasy when they cook. Try to choose at least 80% lean, if you can. You can also use extra lean beef. If you don’t like beef, ground turkey or chicken also works well.

Condiments – These egg rolls are flavored with common burger condiments. We use a combination of ketchup, yellow mustard, and green relish. You can change these up depending on your preferences, using Dijon mustard, BBQ sauce, or even some hot sauce.

Cheese – This recipe uses sharp cheddar cheese as it provides a lot of flavour. Other cheeses that work well are Monterey Jack, pepper Jack, or Swiss.

Seasonings – The seasoning in these egg rolls is kept simple as most of the flavor comes from the onion, garlic, and condiments. We add a bit of salt and pepper, but you can add BBQ seasoning, seasoning salt, or spice blends such as Ranch or Cajun.

You will also need fresh onion, garlic and Worcestershire sauce.

Step by Step Instruction

Prepare the Filling

Begin by preparing the cheeseburger filling.

Heat a medium skillet over medium heat, saute the onions and garlic, brown the beef, then stir in the condiments and cheese.

Form the Egg Rolls

Rolling the egg rolls is not complicated; they don’t have to be perfect. After the first time, you will find a method that works best for you. The main thing is not to roll them too tightly and ensure they are sealed.

Step 1 – Place a wrapper on your work surface with a point facing you. Add a couple tablespoons of the meat mixture in the center or the wrapper from point to point, horizontally.

Step 2 – Fold the corner facing you over the filling.

Step 3 – Fold each side point over the filling.

Step 4 – Roll the egg roll into a log. Add a dab of water to the top corner and gently press it to the egg roll to seal.

Pro Tip: Gently dampening the corner of the egg roll wrapper makes the dough sticky and allows the edges to seal. You want to just slightly moisten it; if they are too wet, they will become soggy and harder to handle.

Air Fry the Egg Rolls

Set the air fryer to 400°F and cook the egg rolls for 7-9 minutes, turning halfway through. The egg rolls are done when they are golden brown and crispy. You may notice small bits of filling bubbling out. This is normal.

Serving Suggestions

I like to serve these air-fried egg rolls as finger food on an appetizer platter.

You can add a selection of dips, such as ketchup, mustard, or burger sauce.

They go great with other appetizers such as meatball sub skewers, firecracker shrimp, or buffalo chicken wontons.

If you wanted to serve these as part of a main meal, they would be delicious with a large salad, or you could serve them with creamy mac & cheese, or a plate of crispy french fries.

Storage

Leftover air-fried egg rolls can be stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator or freezer. They will keep a few days in the fridge or several months in the freezer.

Leftovers can be reheated by popping them in the air fryer at 350°F for a few minutes, or you can reheat them in the oven or microwave.

You can also make these ahead of time and freeze them before cooking. Store them in an airtight container or freezer bag.

They can be air fried from frozen in the same way as fresh, but you will need to add an extra minute or two to the cooking time.

Top Tips & FAQS

Can I cook frozen egg rolls in the air fryer?

You can cook egg rolls in the air fryer from frozen. Just spray them with olive oil, just as you would with fresh wontons. Then cook them at 380°F until crisp and golden. You may need to add a minute or two longer to the cooking time to ensure they are heated all the way through. Generally, they will be fully cooked at 8-10 minutes.
